Overview

The Beatnik Baby Calmer combines noise canceling, pink noise and partial immobilization to comfort children undergoing MRI. Our design philosophy is to give your young patient agency. By donning a line of animal ear attachments, whatever suffering lies ahead, your patients get to choose what animal they want to be that day. They are calmed by their own heartbeat and mindfulness, not sedated or restrained into calmness. This solution both averts the negative public perception of full-body immobilization and reduces the need for anesthesia. Beatnik retails for $50, less than 25% the cost of comparable noise-canceling headphones.

USER NEEDS

8.5 million pediatric MRI are performed annually.

PROBLEM THESIS

Pediatric MRI imaging is highly stressful due to its noisy environment, which causes children to stress, fidget or even cry. In order to restrict children’s movement caused by these factors, the passive full-body immobilization or anesthetic procedures are commonly used, which causes psychological and physiological damage.

VALUE PROPOSITION

No nervous-system damage to patients.

Psychological comfort instead of trauma.

Gives the children agency to dictate their MRI experience.
